The Pursuit For World Domination - 1305 Words

In the early 20th century, world domination was a realistic notion advocated by American leaders, specifically, then-Governor and future President, Theodore Roosevelt. Many outspoken political commentators opposed this notion and believed world domination was excessive and unnecessary and was not in America’s best interest. One of these political commentators was none other than the revered Mark Twain, who, in his 1901 satirical piece, â€Å"To the Person Sitting in Darkness†, attempts to expose the downsides of American expansionism. Twain accomplishes this by satirically describing the pursuit for world domination as a â€Å"game† between coercive countries and highlighting the deceptive nature of these countries to win the â€Å"game†. Also through†¦show more content†¦By using imagery and symbolism, Mark Twain attempts to demonize American foreign policy by portraying it as dishonest and opportunistic. Twain uses the term â€Å"Christendomâ⠂¬  to describe America and other players of the â€Å"game† whose objective is to conquer foreign nations. Twain uses the term â€Å"Those Sitting in Darkness† to describe the nations â€Å"Christendom† is attempting to conquer. It is readily apparent that Twain is implying that the nations who house â€Å"person’s sitting in darkness† have not seen the light of â€Å"Christendom†, which means they are non-Christian nations. To drive home this point Twain gives the example of China, a prominently secular nation, stating it houses countrymen who are â€Å"sitting in darkness† (Twain 3). Twain explains that in order to to gain access to these countrymen and conquer their land, America must appeal to their trust by showing them the â€Å"Blessings of Civilization†. This is a form of religious imagery as Twain is implying that â€Å"Christendom† is blessed by a higher power and have an appealing set of morals and virtues t hat they can offer unblessed nations. However, Twain suggests in numerous occasions that these â€Å"Blessings of Civilization† are merely a guise to help gain the trust of â€Å"those sitting in darkness† in order to better conquer them. Does God Exist? A Philosophical Argument for the Existence of God Does God Exist? If God so desired, He could merely appear and attest to the whole of humankind that He exists. But if He did that, there would be no need for faith. â€Å"Then Jesus told him, Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed † (John 20:29). I’m sure an abundance of people would love for someone to simply show them the evidence for God s existence. Enough of those statements of, You just have to believe† or â€Å"Just have some faith† such statements that leave many people with no comfort or acceptance. I would like to attempt to point out some of the reasons that lead me undoubtedly believe that God exists. First of all, consider the following. When it comes to the prospect of God s existence, the Bible says that there are individuals who have seen sufficient evidence, but they have concealed the truth they have seen. On the other hand, f or those who continue to wonder if God is there, he says, You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you. Before one looks at the facts surrounding God s existence, one must ask themselves, if God does exist, would I want to know him? To follow are some reasons to consider. Anxiety is considered a mental illness that causes distress, worry, and fear to an individual. Some types of anxiety include the following: panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and a generalized anxiety disorder with unrealistic worry (WebMD, 2016). The cause for anxiety is currently unknown, but environmental stress and changes in the brain can be linked factors (WebMD, 2016). Anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults who are 18 and older, this is 18% of the population in the United States (ADAA, 2014). General Anxiety Disorder alone affects 3.1% of the United States population and it most often affects†¦show more content†¦My patient is a 35 year old female who takes Clonazepam, also referred to its brand name Klonopin, whenever she feels like she’s going to have an anxiety attack and feels overwhelmed or stressed. She was originally prescribed to take the medication orally once a day with a dosage of 1 mg. Upon physician’s approval the patient now only takes .5 mg of Clonazepam as needed, this should not be a major concern to this patient. The only concern we would need to be worried about is if the patient took Clonazepam more times than needed and then suddenly stopped taking the medication. This would then lead to withdrawal symptoms which may potentially cause the patient to develop a physical dependence (Everyday Health, 2016). Dosing Information for Clonazepam Adult Dose for Seizure Prophylaxis Adult Clonazepam Dose for Panic Disorder Pediatric Clonazepam Dose for Seizure Prophylaxis Should not exceed 1.5 mg/day divided into 3 doses. It was clear she was suffering from a medical condition which was being poorly managed. Lord of the flies theme analys Essay Theme Analysis on the book, Lord of the FliesThe theme of Lord of the Flies has been questioned and speculated about for decades. Golding, the author, said that the theme was to trace the problems of society back to the sinful nature of man. He wrote the book to show how political systems cannot govern society effectively without first taking into consideration the defects of human nature. The defects of human nature are exemplified in Golding’s novel through the characters of Jack and his hunters. Here, Golding shows that men are inherently evil; if left alone to fend for themselves, they will revert back to the savage roots of their ancestors. This is seen in the novel near the end, when the tribe is hunting Ralph. Matters had become quite out of hand by this time. Even the naval officer who saves the boys knows their society has become savage. Yet Golding’s last comment in his press release criticizes not only the boys on the island but also the society of adults in which the officer lives. Golding asks— while the ship saves the boys from killing each other, who will save the ship from killing other ships or being killed? In this way the society of the outside world mirrors the island society on a larger level. Remember that the novel takes place during World War II. Golding got the idea for the book because of his experiences in the war, where he served in the Navy and learned the inherent sinfulness of man. It’s interesting that the war is mentioned indirectly at the beginning and end of the novel but nowhere in between. This is a remarkable literary device of Golding. After reading any significant portion of this site, it will become obvious that Piggy and Jack symbolize two opposite extremes of human behavior while Ralph is pulled between these philosophies. Piggy demands adherence to the rules of his auntie while Jack subscribes to the philosophy, If it’s fun, do it. Ralph empathizes with parts of both sides; that is why he walks the tight rope. Eventually he seems to side with Piggy, but actually Ralph never changes his philosophy— it is Jack and the rest of the boys who become more extreme in theirs (hunting humans, forming their own tribe, etc.). In this way Ralph portrays the role of government in any modern society. While he wants to satisfy the wishes of the public, he must also realize that certain rules of behavior must be followed in order to prevent anarchy. Unfortunately anarchy defeats order. This is the outcome because Golding believed that government is an ineffective way to keep people together. No matter how logical or reasonable, government will eventually have to give in to the anarchical demands of the public.
